Bringing benefits that range from insulation quality to environmental friendliness, vinyl will last decades and will retain its fantastic appearance with just minor care needed.

During installation, our pros are happy to offer some basic tips on the one area of care that’s consistently required for vinyl siding: Basic cleaning. Not only will performing standard cleaning keep your siding in the best possible shape, it will also keep the exterior of your home looking pristine so your curb appeal stays high. Here are some tips on the two important areas of cleaning vinyl siding.

Grime Removal Methods

For starters, you have to get rid of and major deposits of dirt, dust, mildew, bird residue and any other grime that may become stuck to the siding over time. You have two primary options available here:

• Pressure washer: If you’re comfortable using a pressure washer and have access to one (they’re available for rent at many home improvement stores), it’s the recommended format for removing deposits from vinyl siding. You’ll want to hold the pressure washer nozzle roughly 10 feet away from the surface of your siding – too much closer could risk minor damage. Spray in horizontal sections measuring around 10 feet at a time. One caution here: As you work, try not to spray water underneath horizontal lap joints.
• Cloth or brush: If you don’t have access to a power washer or are not comfortable using one, you can use a bristled brush or even a soft cloth if the deposits aren’t too significant. Go section-by-section and rinse each section off after spraying with a hose.

Cleaning Solution Options

Once you’ve removed the residue, or sometimes during a combined process, you have to also include a cleaning solution that will keep the siding looking great and also prevent future residue buildup. A few solutions that can be used here:

• Baking soda and vinegar: Use roughly 70 percent water and 30 percent white vinegar from your house. This solution is highly effective, even for removing tougher grime stains if you don’t have a power washer. You can also use a mix of baking soda and water, creating a paste that has a strong texture.
• Premade cleaners: Your home improvement store will have several solutions available for cleaning vinyl siding, some of which are meant to be used with pressure washers and others meant for use with brushes.
• Home mix: You can also use other home products mixed up, such as water and oxygen bleach or water and laundry soap.
